Westpfalz-Klinikum to launch midwife-led delivery room
The Westpfalz-Klinikum in Kaiserslautern is expanding its maternity services with the planned opening of a midwife-led delivery room in September 2026. This new concept is designed for healthy women seeking a natural, self-determined birth process with continuous midwife support, complementing the hospital’s existing physician-led obstetric services.
To mark the upcoming opening, the clinic will host a family day on September 4, 2026, featuring tours, workshops, and information sessions for expectant parents. Lead midwife Jessica Schweitzer noted that the initiative aims to increase choice for women and strengthen the role of midwives in obstetrics.
In a related milestone, the clinic recently celebrated the birth of its 750th baby of the year on August 19, 2026. This event coincided with the 750th anniversary of the city of Kaiserslautern. The hospital's maternity department typically sees approximately 1,300 births annually.
