Wests Tigers fans launch group to demand independent board

Wests Tigers supporters are forming a new independent group, Wests Tigers Unite, to demand greater accountability and the reinstatement of an independent board at the rugby league club.

Following a season that saw the team slip from 13th to 15th place, Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne has called for supporters to mobilise during the off-season. The move comes amid long-standing frustration over the club’s performance, noting that the Tigers have missed the finals for 15 consecutive seasons—the longest drought in the competition.

Governance concerns stem from the removal of independent directors in December. Supporters and advocates, including Gary Barnier, have noted that previous understandings regarding the reinstatement of an independent board and the return of Barry O’Farrell as chair have not been met.
