Wetherspoon pub in Gosport denies entry to patrons wearing poppies

Customers at The Star, a JD Wetherspoon pub in Gosport, Hampshire, were reportedly denied entry because they were wearing poppies. Staff at the establishment allegedly informed a group of six people that the symbol could be “perceived as political” and that a “blanket ban” had been implemented on anything that might carry political connotations.

One individual, identified as political activist Dec Lea, claimed he was barred despite not wearing any other national symbols. Video footage of the incident shows staff stating that if patrons wore poppies inside, they would be “asked to leave.” A staff member also noted that groups wearing Pride badges would similarly be turned away to maintain neutrality.

The incident occurred following an anti-migrant protest in the area. While Wetherspoons has a history of supporting the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and raising funds for the charity, this specific branch has faced criticism for its refusal of entry to individuals wearing national symbols.
