Wetherspoons bans loudspeaker music and calls in UK pubs

JD Wetherspoon has implemented a ban on customers playing music or taking phone calls on loudspeaker across its 792 pubs in the United Kingdom and six locations in the Republic of Ireland. The decision follows a rise in customer complaints regarding disruptive noise from smartphones and tablets, which the company stated was driving patrons “nuts.”

To mitigate the issue, the pub chain has installed signage requesting that customers switch their devices to silent or use earphones. While the policy is being enforced, the company noted that staff will use “common sense” rather than a strict zero-tolerance approach. Managers retain the option to ask customers to leave if they refuse to comply with the new rules.

Founder and chairman Sir Tim Martin described the move as an effort to maintain the pubs as an “oasis of tranquillity and contemplation.” The policy aligns with broader public sentiment in Britain; recent surveys, including those by Transport for London and YouGov, indicate that a majority of the public finds loudspeaker use in shared spaces to be a nuisance.
