Wetterskip proposes 85 million euro sewage pipeline in Friesland

Wetterskip Fryslân is proposing the construction of a major sewage pipeline connecting Sint Annaparochie to Franeker. The project, estimated to cost approximately 85 million euros, would involve a pipeline exceeding 14 kilometers in length.

The initiative stems from the need to replace existing wastewater treatment plants in both Franeker and Sint Annaparochie. To improve financial feasibility, the water authority plans to direct sewage straight to Franeker, which would likely result in the closure of the Sint Annaparochie facility.

The proposed route travels south from Sint Anne through Menaam, Berlikum Skingen-Slappeterp, Peins, Zweins, and Salverd. To avoid archaeological sites, the pipeline will not follow the shortest possible path. Project leader Erwin Bos noted that the plan involves crossing more than 40 private land parcels, requiring customized communication and engagement with landowners.

A decision on the plan is expected on September 22. If approved, a two-year preparation phase will follow, with construction estimated to take at least two years. If the project proceeds without major delays, completion is anticipated by the end of 2030.
