Bourton-on-the-Water overtourism strains historic Cotswold village
Bourton-on-the-Water, a village of about 4,000 residents in the Cotswolds, is receiving between 5,000 and 10,000 visitors per day during peak periods, according to resident estimates. The surge of day‑trippers and Instagram‑driven tourists has led to litter, public urination, and even removal of sections of the iconic Cotswold stone walls.
A local survey found more than 90 % of residents consider the current level of tourism unsustainable, with 94.6 % labeling the visitor numbers excessive. In response, the Gloucestershire County Council has opened a public consultation on traffic and parking, while residents have organized under Bourton Residents Voice, chaired by longtime resident Charlotte Joynes. Joynes warned that the influx has turned the “beautiful quintessential English village” into “Blackpool‑on‑the‑Water”, citing the closure of the coach park and buses now using residential streets.
Authorities are being pressed to develop solutions that protect the historic character of the village while managing the intense visitor pressure.
