Sydney beaches closed after whale carcass washes ashore

Coogee and Maroubra beaches in Sydney’s eastern suburbs have been closed indefinitely following the discovery of a whale carcass washed up on the rocks near Lurline Bay. Authorities issued the closure as a precaution due to the risk of increased shark activity, as decaying carcasses can attract predators to the area.

Randwick City Council is coordinating with the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries and the Gamay Rangers to manage the removal of the animal. Mayor Dr. Clare Willington emphasized that the process will be “culturally respectful,” noting that the whale is a significant totem animal to the local Bidjigal people.

Experts suggest the carcass may belong to a younger humpback whale, with some observations indicating possible entanglement in fishing gear or ropes as a potential cause of death. Meanwhile, in Tasmania, authorities are working to rescue another large whale stranded in shallow waters near Turners Beach, advising the public to avoid the area due to safety concerns.
