Whale Sanctuary Project secures 20-year lease in Nova Scotia
The Arizona-based non-profit Whale Sanctuary Project has secured a 20-year lease for Crown land and coastal waters on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore. The lease covers 83 hectares near the community of Wine Harbour and includes an option for a 20-year renewal, potentially providing 40 years of land use.
The project aims to establish North America’s first seaside refuge for whales retired from marine parks, specifically targeting captive orcas and beluga whales. The sanctuary is designed to provide a natural ocean environment with human care and veterinary support, offering a habitat significantly larger than traditional marine park tanks.
While the project has faced opposition from some local residents and animal-rights advocates, organizers have moved forward with a groundbreaking ceremony and signed a memorandum of understanding with the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs. Work has already commenced on refurbishing a local wharf to serve as a staging area and facility for the sanctuary.
