Whale sharks appear in the Mexican Caribbean

In the Mexican Caribbean, whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are currently appearing in significant numbers near Isla Mujeres. These massive fish, which can reach lengths of 12 to 18 meters and weigh over 20 tons, are filter feeders that consume plankton and small fish.

Local tourism operators, such as Contoy Adventures, facilitate encounters with these endangered animals under strict ecological protocols. Safety and conservation measures include mandatory life jackets, limiting water entry to two people per boat to minimize stress, and maintaining a minimum distance of 2 meters from the animals. The seasonal presence of these sharks in Quintana Roo is expected to conclude by September 17.
