Whale watching tourism supports conservation in Abrolhos

Whale watching tourism has become a vital economic driver and conservation tool in the Abrolhos Archipelago, Brazil. Following the establishment of the Abrolhos Marine Park in 1983 and subsequent environmental protections that prohibited fishing in the area, local maritime workers have transitioned from fishing to eco-tourism.

Paulo Salomão, a local boat captain, exemplifies this shift. After training with the Brazilian Navy, Salomão moved from fishing to transporting tourists and divers. His business has grown significantly due to the seasonal migration of humpback whales, which travel approximately 4,000 kilometers from Antarctica to the warm waters of southern Bahia to mate and give birth.

The peak tourism period occurs in August, driven by the presence of these whales. This industry provides employment and supports the local economy in coastal regions like Caravelas while helping to preserve the marine biodiversity of the region.
