Whalefall film explores survival after being swallowed by a whale

The film “Whalefall”, directed by Brian Duffield and based on the novel by Daniel Kraus, follows Jay Gardiner, played by Austin Abrams. While scuba diving off the central coast of California to recover his father's body, Gardiner is swallowed by a sperm whale and becomes trapped inside. With only one hour of oxygen remaining, the story focuses on his struggle for survival and his complex emotional relationship with his father, portrayed by Josh Brolin.

While the film presents an intense survival scenario, marine experts note the scientific improbability of a human being swallowed by a whale. Dr. Anaïs Remili, a marine ecotoxicologist at Simon Fraser University, explains that sperm whales typically feed using suction to consume prey like squid. While baleen whales engulf water to filter small organisms, the mechanics of swallowing a human are significantly different from their natural diet.
