WhatsApp accounts suspended worldwide, users report sudden deactivations

Since early August, users in Spain, India, Indonesia, Italy, the United States and other countries have reported that their WhatsApp accounts were abruptly deactivated. A standard notice informs them that their activity and device information are being reviewed for compliance with the service’s terms, with a promised decision within 24 hours. Meta confirmed the suspensions, saying they aim to protect users but sometimes make errors, and that affected accounts are being reinstated where possible.

Separately, guidance has been published on how to recover deleted chats or move WhatsApp data to a new phone. Users are advised to check their most recent cloud backup (Google Drive for Android, iCloud for iOS), ensure the same phone number is used, and follow the restore prompts after reinstalling the app. Encrypted backups require the user’s password or 64‑digit key for successful recovery.
