WhatsApp adds usernames, iPad accounts and green online indicator in 2026 feature rollout

In 2026 WhatsApp expanded its platform with a series of new features. Users can now create a unique @username, allowing contacts to reach them without sharing a phone number. A subtle green dot will indicate when a contact is active, replacing the traditional "online" text and appearing only in the contact info screen.

WhatsApp also enabled independent accounts on iPad, letting users register directly on the tablet without linking to a phone. Additional updates include an integrated PDF reader for opening documents within chats, and CarPlay and Android Auto support that lets drivers read, reply and make calls hands‑free. Users can share songs from Apple Music or Spotify in their status updates.

Meta AI was added to WhatsApp Web, providing on‑the‑fly summarisation, document analysis and voice queries. A custom emoji panel, available to WhatsApp Plus subscribers, lets users replace the default reaction icons. Meta Business Agent introduced a native AI solution for WhatsApp Business API customers. These features are being rolled out gradually in beta across several regions, with some limited to specific devices or countries.
