WhatsApp adds optional username alias to protect user privacy

WhatsApp is gradually introducing a new optional feature that lets users create a unique username, or alias, to start chats without revealing their phone numbers. The rollout began in late June and will continue through early July 2026, reaching all markets over time. Users can enable the alias by updating the app, going to Settings → Account → Username, choosing an available name, and confirming. The number remains required to create an account, but it stays hidden from contacts until the user chooses to share it. The feature aims to give users more control over personal data, especially in business or unfamiliar contacts, and does not include a public directory; the exact username must be known to initiate a conversation. Creating an alias is optional, and existing WhatsApp functionality, including calls and groups, remains unchanged.
