WhatsApp Web launches voice and video calls with device transfer and waiting room
Meta announced an update that lets WhatsApp Web place voice and video calls directly in a browser, removing the need for a desktop app. Calls are end‑to‑end encrypted, have no time limits and are free. The update adds a dedicated Calls tab showing call history and favourite contacts, screen sharing and in‑call reactions. New features include call transfer between phone, tablet, web and desktop without hanging up, a Waiting Room that requires host approval for group participants, QuickHD high‑definition video from the first seconds of a call, and noise‑suppression to reduce background sounds. The rollout is gradual and the company says the features will be available to all users in the coming weeks, targeting people who use shared or restricted computers, especially Linux users lacking an official desktop client.
