WhatsApp auto-save of photos and videos can be disabled to free phone storage

WhatsApp’s default setting automatically saves incoming photos, videos, and other media to a phone’s gallery. This can quickly fill storage, clutter the gallery, and raise privacy concerns.

Users can stop the auto‑save by opening WhatsApp, tapping the three‑dot menu, selecting Settings → Storage and Data, and disabling the Media auto‑download options for photos, videos, audio and documents. Additionally, the Media visibility option can be turned off for individual chats or groups, preventing new media from appearing in the gallery.

After adjusting these settings, users should check their gallery to confirm that new WhatsApp media no longer appears, keeping storage free and the gallery organized.
