WhatsApp updates OS requirements for Android and iOS

WhatsApp is updating its minimum operating system requirements, which will eventually phase out support for several older smartphone models. The changes are intended to maintain security, performance, and compatibility with new features like Meta AI.

For Android users, the minimum requirement has already shifted; as of September 8, support for Android 5.0 and 5.1 has ended, requiring Android 6.0 or higher. For Apple users, the transition will occur in stages. Currently, iOS 15.1 or later is required, but by November 30, 2026, the platform will mandate iOS 15.5 as the baseline.

Compatibility depends on the installed software version rather than the device's age. However, many legacy devices cannot be updated to these minimum thresholds. Affected Android models include various Samsung Galaxy (S3, S4 Mini, Note 2), Motorola (Moto G, Moto E), LG, and Sony Xperia devices. On the Apple side, older hardware such as the iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, and 6 Plus may lose access if they cannot run iOS 15.5.
