WhatsApp ends support for Android 5 devices

WhatsApp has officially ended support for devices running Android 5.0 and 5.1, effective September 8, 2026. The messaging platform, owned by Meta, now requires a minimum of Android 6.0 or later to function. This change affects both the standard WhatsApp Messenger and WhatsApp Business applications.

Users with older devices that cannot be updated to Android 6.0 or higher will no longer be able to send or receive messages, media, or updates. Meta stated that the decision is intended to keep pace with technological and security advancements, as older operating systems often lack critical security updates and the ability to support new features like artificial intelligence.

While many modern smartphones are unaffected, the update impacts users of older hardware, such as certain legacy models from Samsung, Motorola, Sony, and LG. Users are encouraged to check their system version in their device settings and perform a software update if available. If an update to Android 6.0 or higher is not possible, a device upgrade may be necessary to continue using the service.
