WhatsApp experiences global outage affecting multimedia sharing
Users of WhatsApp, the messaging platform owned by Meta, reported a global service outage on Monday, primarily affecting the ability to send and receive multimedia files. The technical disruption impacted the sharing of photos, videos, stickers, and GIFs.
According to the outage monitoring platform DownDetector, a significant volume of reports emerged on Monday morning. Approximately 41% of complaints related to messaging, 40% to app functionality, and 13% to notifications. While standard text messaging remained largely functional, users noted that multimedia files often remained stuck in a 'sending' state or failed to upload entirely, especially with larger file sizes.
The issue appeared to be a platform-level technical glitch rather than a local network problem, as reports surfaced from multiple countries including India, the United Kingdom, France, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Spain, and Colombia. As of the latest reports, Meta has not issued an official statement regarding the cause of the disruption.
