WhatsApp and Apple face security threats from zero-click exploits
WhatsApp and Apple users are facing various security and privacy developments. Cybersecurity experts have identified a dangerous zero-click vulnerability affecting iPhone users on iOS 16. This exploit allows attackers to gain unauthorized access to WhatsApp accounts without any user interaction, such as clicking links. Once inside, criminals impersonate the victim to request urgent money transfers from contacts, often deleting the fraudulent messages to hide their tracks.
In response to evolving threats, Meta is developing a “Restricted Chat” feature for WhatsApp. This function aims to enhance privacy by preventing sensitive conversations from syncing to linked devices like WhatsApp Web or computers, thereby reducing the risk of data interception by third-party tools. Additionally, new visual updates for the WhatsApp reaction menu are being tested on iOS to provide a more seamless, translucent interface.
On the legal and social front, warnings have been issued regarding the privacy of minors in WhatsApp groups. Sharing images or personal data of children without parental consent can lead to civil or criminal liability. Furthermore, new extortion schemes have emerged where criminals use the “view once” photo feature to send intimidating content and demand payments under pressure.
