WhatsApp fraud surge targets vulnerable users in Spain, authorities warn

Spain’s Social Security agency has warned that criminals are using phone calls, WhatsApp messages and SMS to pose as officials offering financial aid. Victims, often unemployed or pensioners, are asked for personal data such as ID numbers and bank details, after which thieves drain their accounts or commit identity theft.

A related wave of WhatsApp hacks has been reported, with fraudsters using social‑engineering tactics to obtain the platform’s six‑digit verification code. They impersonate technical support or official services, then hijack the account to send contacts offers of cheap foreign currency or urgent loan requests. Police have also flagged a newer “virtual kidnapping” scheme that employs artificial intelligence to fabricate ransom videos and extort families.

Authorities advise never sharing verification codes, enabling two‑step verification, and verifying any unsolicited offers through trusted channels. Victims should contact their bank to block cards, report the incident to the police (Mossos d'Esquadra), and follow recommended security measures.
