WhatsApp introduces guest calling for users without accounts

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called ‘Guest Calling’ that allows individuals without a WhatsApp account to join calls via a web browser. This functionality enables users to host calls and share a link with others, who can then join by simply entering their name in a computer browser without needing to install the application or register a phone number.

To use the feature, the host must have an active WhatsApp account. The host generates a call link from the ‘Calls’ tab and distributes it through various channels such as email or calendar invites. Guests enter a virtual waiting room and must be admitted by the host before joining the conversation. The service supports both one-on-one and group calls for up to 32 participants.

While guests can utilize essential features like screen sharing, sending reactions, and raising their hands, they have limited access compared to registered users. Guests cannot see the phone numbers of other participants, send text messages, or invite additional people to the call. The calls remain free, end-to-end encrypted, and do not have a set time limit. Meta also plans to integrate these calls with Google and Outlook calendars in the future.
