WhatsApp introduces new call features and spam protection

Meta is developing new call settings for WhatsApp to provide users with greater control over incoming calls, specifically targeting spam and unknown callers. According to reports, the platform is working on a filter that offers three distinct levels of protection. Users can choose to have no interference, automatically silence calls from unknown numbers while keeping them in the call history, or utilize a new feature where the app answers the call first to ask the caller for their reason for contact. This reason would then be transcribed into text for the user to review before deciding whether to join the call.

Additionally, WhatsApp is expanding its calling capabilities through a guest connection feature. This allows users to invite individuals to calls even if they do not have a WhatsApp account. Guests can join via a link in a web browser on a computer, where they can participate in individual or group calls with up to 32 participants. These guest calls support basic functions such as screen sharing and emoji reactions. Future updates are expected to include integrations with Google Calendar and Outlook to facilitate easier call scheduling.
