WhatsApp introduces parental controls for teenage users
WhatsApp has introduced a new suite of optional parental controls designed for teenagers, typically aged 13 to 17. These tools allow parents and guardians to manage specific privacy and security settings without accessing the content of private messages or calls, which remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
Key features include the ability for parents to control who can see a teen’s profile photo, who can add them to groups, and how they interact with Channels and Status updates. Parents will also receive notifications when a teenager joins or leaves a group, or when a group they belong to experiences a significant increase in membership.
The update also includes management of Meta AI, offering a “Limited Content” mode that provides stricter restrictions than the standard setting for users over 13. To prevent teenagers from unilaterally bypassing these restrictions, any changes to loosen security settings require approval via a parent-set PIN. The rollout is intended to encourage digital safety and open dialogue between families while maintaining the core privacy of individual communications.
