WhatsApp Introduces Username Feature and Opens Early Reservations

Meta's WhatsApp is adding a username system that will let users contact each other without sharing phone numbers. The new feature, aimed at improving privacy, will not include a public directory; contacts must know the exact username to start a chat. Early reservations for usernames are now open, with users able to claim a handle through the latest app version under Settings → Account → Username. The rollout will occur gradually over the coming months, and end‑to‑end encryption remains unchanged.

WhatsApp says the change serves as a privacy layer that masks the underlying SIM‑linked identifier, reducing the risk of number‑scraping and social‑engineering attacks.
