WhatsApp introduces Username feature to chat without sharing phone numbers
Meta’s messaging app WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new Username feature that lets users communicate without revealing their mobile numbers. Starting 29 June 2026, users can reserve a unique username of 3‑35 characters, with the reservation process already open and the full feature expected to be enabled for all accounts by the end of 2026.
The optional “Username Key” adds an extra security layer, requiring first‑time contacts to provide an additional code. WhatsApp says there will be no public directory or searchable listing of usernames, reducing spam and unwanted messages. The rollout will be phased across countries, beginning with reservations now and subsequent activation via in‑app notifications when the feature becomes available in each region.
The change is positioned as one of WhatsApp’s biggest privacy updates, aiming to give billions of users a safer, more private way to connect while preserving the option to continue using phone numbers if they prefer.
