WhatsApp introduces username system to reduce phone number sharing

WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a new username system designed to reduce the platform's reliance on phone numbers. This update allows users to communicate with others, including businesses and new acquaintances, without sharing their private phone numbers.

Under the new system, the contact creation interface on both Android and iOS will include a dedicated field for usernames alongside the traditional name and phone number fields. Users can reserve their desired handles by navigating to Settings, Account, and Username within the application.

Reports indicate that the rollout is being implemented gradually. The feature also includes optional security settings that allow users to control who can message them using their username, providing an additional layer of privacy and communication management.
