WhatsApp introduces usernames to conceal phone numbers

WhatsApp is rolling out a new username feature that lets users send messages without revealing their phone numbers. Users can reserve a username of up to 35 characters, beginning with a letter and containing at least one letter; numbers, symbols, and certain patterns are prohibited. The feature will be introduced gradually, first on Android and then on iOS, with full operation expected by the end of the year.

When a username is active, recipients who have not previously saved the sender’s number will see only the chosen name. An optional security key can be enabled so that only contacts who know the key can initiate a conversation, adding an extra layer of privacy. WhatsApp does not provide a search function for usernames, so the exact name must be known to start a chat. The rollout is being announced in multiple markets, with the feature slated to become available in the fall.
