WhatsApp introduces usernames to enhance user privacy

WhatsApp is beginning a gradual rollout of a new username feature designed to enhance user privacy. This update allows users to create a unique identifier of up to 35 characters, enabling them to start conversations and exchange contact information without revealing their actual phone numbers to new contacts.

While a phone number remains mandatory to create and maintain an account, the use of usernames is entirely optional. Users can modify or delete their chosen usernames at any time. To prevent impersonation, certain celebrity names will be unavailable for reservation.

The feature will initially be available through the WhatsApp mobile application via account or profile settings, though it will not be accessible on WhatsApp Web or desktop versions during the initial phase.
