WhatsApp investment scams targeting community groups

Authorities are warning of sophisticated investment scams utilizing WhatsApp groups to target community members. Scammers often join or create groups centered around shared hobbies, such as sports or fishing, to establish trust. Once rapport is built, individuals posing as financial experts promote high-yield trading platforms. These schemes frequently use fabricated screenshots of profits and fake testimonials from accomplices to lure victims into depositing funds.

When victims attempt to withdraw money, scammers often demand additional payments for fake taxes or administrative fees before disappearing. To increase credibility, fraudsters have also been cloning news websites, such as Reuters, and publishing fake reports involving public figures like Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to endorse unlicensed trading sites.

General WhatsApp security risks also include account takeover attempts via verification code theft and family emergency scams, where attackers impersonate relatives in distress to solicit money.
