WhatsApp launches in-app bill payments in India

WhatsApp has introduced a new in-app bill payment feature for users in India, aiming to integrate more utility functions into its messaging platform. Powered by the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, the service provides access to 22,722 billers across 30 different categories.

Users can manage payments for electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card bills, and loan repayments. The feature allows individuals to view past payments, track upcoming bills, and manage multiple accounts for home or office under a single provider. Payments can be processed via India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), debit cards, or credit cards.

Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head of Meta India, stated that the feature aims to bring simplicity to routine household tasks, allowing users to manage bills without switching between multiple apps. The rollout will be gradual, becoming available to all Android and iOS users across India in the coming weeks.
