WhatsApp launches usernames in Colombia and adds Android parental‑control hub

On 20 July 2024 WhatsApp rolled out the @handle username system in Colombia, letting individuals and businesses reserve a permanent identifier that can be linked to their Facebook or Instagram profiles. The change removes the need to share a phone number for new conversations, enhances privacy, and offers verified brands a way to curb impersonation. Meta also introduced a permanent user ID (BSUID) to keep message delivery consistent even if users hide their numbers.

At the same time, WhatsApp refreshed its parental‑control feature on Android, creating a dedicated settings section that makes it easier for adults to manage child accounts. Parents can receive alerts when a child adds contacts, changes settings, or receives messages from unknown numbers, while the child’s chats remain private.
