WhatsApp restricts access for users on outdated operating systems

WhatsApp is implementing a new server-side security measure that restricts account access for users running outdated operating systems on Android and iOS devices. This update is being rolled out gradually to selected accounts and does not require a new version of the WhatsApp application itself to trigger.

When affected users attempt to log in, they will encounter a mandatory warning directing them to their device settings to install the latest available operating system update. This step cannot be skipped. The primary objective is to enhance security by ensuring that the underlying mobile platform is patched against known vulnerabilities.

While WhatsApp utilizes end-to-end encryption to protect messages during transit, outdated operating systems may contain flaws that allow malware to access data before it is encrypted or after it is decrypted. By enforcing system-level updates, WhatsApp aims to mitigate risks posed by compromised hardware that could jeopardize user data and privacy.
