WhatsApp restricts access on devices with outdated operating systems
Meta is implementing a security measure that may prevent WhatsApp users from accessing their accounts on devices running outdated operating systems. This change is being rolled out via server-side updates, meaning users may encounter login restrictions even without downloading a new version of the application.
When an outdated operating system is detected, users will receive a notification directing them to their device settings to install available software updates. This measure aims to enhance security, as older operating systems that no longer receive official patches from developers are more vulnerable to cyberattacks and malware, which could potentially compromise user data despite WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption.
Specific requirements include the end of support for Android 5.0 and 5.1, with Android 6.0 or higher now required. For iPhone users, the current minimum requirement is iOS 15.1, with plans to increase this threshold to iOS 15.5 in the future. Users with hardware that cannot support these newer operating systems may need to replace their devices to continue using the service.
