WhatsApp rolls out disappearing messages and storage tools to free phone memory

WhatsApp has introduced a disappearing messages feature that lets users set chats to auto‑delete after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. The option, available globally, helps reduce on‑device data buildup and limits the exposure of private conversations should a phone be accessed by others.

The app also provides a hidden storage management screen on Android and iPhone, listing large media files and allowing bulk deletion. Users can free several gigabytes by selecting and removing heavy videos, photos and other files, while deleted items remain visible in the chat thread unless the sender also removes them. Recent deletions can be undone immediately or recovered from device backups.
