WhatsApp rolls out username reservation to boost user privacy

WhatsApp has begun a phased rollout of a new username reservation feature that lets people start conversations without revealing their phone number. The option is currently being offered to a limited set of users, beginning with a test in Argentina and expanding to other markets such as Spain.

To reserve a username, users open Settings → Account → Username and choose a unique identifier. The name can be used for chats, groups, calls and video calls once the feature is fully enabled. An optional four‑digit PIN can be added to require the sender to enter the code before the first message is delivered, adding an extra layer of control.

The feature remains optional; traditional phone‑number based messaging continues unchanged, and existing contacts will still see the user’s number. WhatsApp says the gradual deployment will continue over the coming months, with availability varying by country and individual account.
