WhatsApp rolls out usernames and BSUID in Brazil
WhatsApp has begun a phased rollout of usernames for both personal and business accounts in Brazil. Identified by the @ symbol, this feature allows users to be contacted without needing to share their phone numbers.
For personal accounts, the username can keep the phone number hidden from anyone who does not have the contact saved. Users also have the option to set a four-digit security key for first-time contacts. There is no public directory for searching these usernames; users must know the exact handle to start a conversation.
In business accounts, the phone number remains visible on the profile, but the username serves as an additional searchable identifier. To support this, Meta introduced the Business-Scoped User ID (BSUID), a unique identifier for individuals within a specific business portfolio. This BSUID prevents data scraping and cannot be reused by other businesses. Companies will only receive a user's BSUID after an interaction has occurred, ensuring that lists of these IDs cannot be purchased or imported.
