WhatsApp introduces usernames and larger file sharing

WhatsApp is adding a username option that lets users communicate without revealing their phone number. The feature will roll out gradually from July 2026, allowing each user to pick a unique name that can be edited or removed. Verified creators, businesses and public figures will be able to claim the same handle they use on Instagram or Facebook, preventing third‑parties from hijacking well‑known names. A TikTok creator sparked controversy by reserving the handle @lolalolita and demanding payment to release it, but Meta says such cases will be blocked for verified accounts.

In addition, the app will support sending files larger than the current limit, with improved format compatibility, faster search of received documents and lower mobile data consumption. The update, available for both mobile and desktop versions, will be delivered in stages after users update to the latest version from official app stores.
