WhatsApp security: How to prevent account hijacking and unauthorized access

Users of the WhatsApp messaging application are advised to take specific security measures to prevent account hijacking and unauthorized access. Scammers often use social engineering tactics, such as posing as technical support or acquaintances, to trick individuals into sharing six-digit verification codes sent via SMS. Sharing these codes can allow attackers to register the user's account on a different device, leading to identity theft and fraudulent communications with the victim's contacts.

To secure an account, users should regularly review the ‘Linked Devices’ section within the app settings to ensure no unrecognized devices are active. If an unknown device is found, users should immediately select ‘Log Out’ from that device.

Additionally, enabling two-step verification is a critical defense. This process involves creating a unique six-digit PIN within the account settings. Users are cautioned never to share registration codes or verification numbers with anyone, regardless of the reason provided.
