WhatsApp tests integration of third-party AI agents

WhatsApp is testing a new feature in its Android beta version that allows users to integrate third-party AI agents and bots directly into the messaging platform. This development, identified in beta version 2.26.35.3, aims to transform the app into a hub for conversational AI services from providers such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.

Users can manage up to five external agents through a new ‘Agents’ section in the app settings. Each agent can be customized with a unique name and profile picture, appearing in the chat list as an individual contact. To establish a connection, WhatsApp generates a unique API key that must be entered into the third-party service hosting the agent.

Privacy and security protocols differ for these integrations. While standard WhatsApp messages utilize end-to-end encryption, conversations with third-party agents are not encrypted by WhatsApp. Instead, messages are processed through Meta’s services to reach the external developer. However, the agents are restricted to their specific chat threads and cannot access a user’s personal chats, contact lists, or media files.

Additionally, WhatsApp is testing a notification feature to remind users of unsent draft messages, which would trigger an alert after approximately one minute of inactivity to prevent users from forgetting to complete a response.
