WhatsApp tests new AI-powered image editor

WhatsApp is developing a new image editor powered by Meta AI, currently being tested in an Android beta version. The update aims to provide advanced editing tools directly within the messaging app, reducing the need for third-party applications.

A key feature identified is an “Expand” tool, which uses generative AI to convert horizontal or square photos into a 9:16 vertical format. Unlike traditional cropping, this tool analyzes the existing image and generates new, coherent content around the edges to fill the frame. This allows users to create full-screen photos for WhatsApp Status without losing parts of the original composition or leaving black bars.
