WhatsApp tests offline voice-to-text dictation for Android

WhatsApp is testing a new voice-to-text dictation feature for Android users, currently appearing in beta version 2.26.37.8. This tool allows users to speak messages that are converted into text, which can then be reviewed and sent as standard text messages rather than audio recordings.

A notable aspect of this feature is its ability to function offline. By utilizing locally downloaded language packs, the app can process speech on the device without requiring an active internet connection. This approach maintains alignment with end-to-end encryption protocols as audio data does not need to be routed through external cloud servers for transcription.

The feature is expected to be integrated directly into the chat bar for use in individual chats, group conversations, and channels. Initial testing suggests support for English, German, French, Italian, and Japanese. Once the feature reaches sufficient stability, it is expected to be rolled out to the general user base.
