WhatsApp to Debut Voice-Message Widget as German Health Advice Recommends Nighttime Phone Shutdown

Meta’s WhatsApp is testing a home‑screen widget that lets users record and send voice messages directly from the Android start screen. The widget, spotted in the Android 2.26.28.2 beta by WABetaInfo, will occupy a 3 × 1 cell, can be resized, and allows selection of multiple contacts before sending. A release date has not been announced, but the feature is expected in an upcoming update.

German health experts advise users to completely power off smartphones at night rather than rely on airplane mode. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection states there is no proven health risk from mobile emissions, but recommends minimizing exposure. Studies cited by the International School of Management and AOK suggest that turning off phones improves sleep quality, mental recovery, and battery longevity, while also reducing background power draw and prolonging device lifespan.
