WhatsApp to end support for older Android and iOS devices
WhatsApp is updating its minimum operating system requirements, which will end support for older mobile devices.
Starting September 8, 2026, the application will only be compatible with devices running Android 6 or later. This change affects users on Android 5.0 or 5.1, potentially impacting older models from manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola, Sony, LG, and Google. While an official list of affected models has not been released—as compatibility depends on specific manufacturer updates—notable devices potentially impacted include the Moto G (1st gen), Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, and various Sony Xperia and LG models.
iPhone users will face a different update schedule. On November 30, the minimum requirement will increase from iOS 15.1 to iOS 15.5. Unlike the Android transition, this change does not permanently disqualify specific iPhone generations; instead, users with models like the iPhone 6s or 7 will simply need to ensure their devices are updated to the required iOS version.
