WhatsApp updates device requirements and introduces new features
WhatsApp is implementing significant technical updates that will affect device compatibility and user features. The platform will end support for older operating systems to maintain security and performance. By September 2026, Android devices will require at least version 6.0. For iPhone users, support for iOS 15.1 will end on November 30, 2026, after which iOS 15.5 or higher will be required. Affected Android models include older Samsung Galaxy, Moto G, and LG Optimus series, while affected iPhones include the 5, 5c, 5s, 6, and 6 Plus.
In addition to compatibility changes, Meta is rolling out several new features. WhatsApp is testing AI bot integration on iOS, allowing users to interact with external agents. For Apple Watch users, the app has expanded emoji reactions from a limited set of six to the full system emoji catalog. iPhone users are also receiving a new, more seamless search shortcut that appears when scrolling up through chat histories. Furthermore, WhatsApp is introducing new security measures, such as the ability to add a custom password to accounts, and implementing limits on initiating new chats with inactive contacts to reduce unsolicited messaging.
