WhatsApp updates iPad app with desktop-style sidebar
WhatsApp is rolling out a significant interface update for its iPad application, introducing a desktop-inspired sidebar to improve navigation. This redesign replaces the traditional bottom navigation bar with a persistent vertical column, allowing users to switch between Chats, Updates, Communities, Calls, and Meta AI more efficiently.
The new layout enables a three-pane structure on larger tablet displays: a primary navigation sidebar on the left, a chat list in the center, and the active conversation on the right. This approach aims to better utilize the horizontal space of an iPad, particularly in landscape orientation or when using Stage Manager. To provide flexibility, users can hide the sidebar to maximize the screen area dedicated to messages.
The rollout is currently gradual, appearing for some users in TestFlight betas and a limited number of standard App Store users. The design incorporates elements of the Liquid Glass interface, utilizing transparent layers and surfaces that align with the visual language used in the Mac version of the app.
