WhatsApp users face verification flooding attacks and account bans

WhatsApp users, particularly in Lebanon and Syria, have experienced a wave of targeted attacks involving the flooding of verification codes and forced logouts. This pattern, which began around August 14, resembles a user-level distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. Instead of targeting the service's servers, attackers flood the verification and recovery paths of specific phone numbers with repeated requests, causing delays and making account recovery difficult.

Separately, users face risks of account restrictions or bans due to certain usage patterns. Common causes for bans include using unofficial modified versions of the app, such as GB WhatsApp, sending identical messages to large numbers of contacts in a short period, or using automated tools for messaging. To protect accounts, users are advised to use only official applications and avoid high-intensity messaging activities with unknown contacts.
