WhatsApp Introduces Username Option Amid Privacy Benefits and Fraud Warnings

WhatsApp is rolling out a feature that lets users reserve a unique username. The name can replace the phone number shown to other contacts, especially in large group chats or when connecting with new people, but the underlying telephone number remains visible to WhatsApp and its parent company Meta.

Consumer‑rights lawyer Ralf Reichertz of the Verbraucherzentrale Thüringen warned that the new usernames could be exploited for fraud, as criminals may choose names that mimic businesses, authorities or public figures. He advised users to pick neutral pseudonyms, add numbers, and enable the optional username key that requires a confirmation code before a new contact can message them. The usernames can currently be reserved but will only become visible to contacts later in the year.
