WhatsApp's Username feature held pending Indian regulator review

Meta's WhatsApp announced an optional Username feature that lets users reserve a unique handle before the full launch. The company began a reservation period but the feature has not yet been made live.

The Indian government issued a notice ordering a hold on the rollout, warning that the feature could increase fraud, phishing and scam risks. In response, Meta answered seven key questions, explaining that usernames will remain optional, not searchable, and that reserved names will include celebrities, verified accounts and other protected entities. The company said the feature will be rolled out gradually later this year after satisfying regulatory concerns.
