WHC advises gradual return to work to combat post‑vacation fatigue

Experts from WHC warn that many employees feel more tired after summer holidays than before, a phenomenon that can strain both individuals and organizations. The abrupt switch from intensive travel or packed leisure schedules to early‑morning work, tight deadlines and performance pressure can cause concentration problems, irritability and a rise in mistakes.

WHC’s guide, published on the HR portal, recommends a “buffer day” between the end of leave and the first workday, allowing time for household tasks and sleep‑rhythm adjustment. On the first day back, teams should prioritize tasks, hold brief catch‑up meetings, and avoid scheduling major presentations, strategic sessions or critical deadlines during the initial week. A staged workload not only improves employee well‑being but also helps companies maintain productivity and reduce error rates.

The advice applies to firms of all sizes and is especially relevant where many staff return from vacation simultaneously, creating a surge in workload for managers and potentially disrupting normal operations.
